En lisant cette information il y a quelques jours, je ne fus malheureusement pas étonnée. L’argument de l’inadéquation de mesures visant l’émancipation féminine aux texte religieux ne date pas d’aujourd’hui et le Nigeria n’est pas un cas isolé. Le Sénégal et la Côte d’Ivoire ont également vu leurs dispositions légales en faveur des femmes critiquées en raison de la non conformité aux croyances religieuses. En effet, l’interprétation restrictive des textes religieux constitue un obstacle à la mise en place de mesures favorisant les droits des femmes en Afrique.

Et c’est la que bât blesse ! L’émancipation des femmes africaines est un enjeu essentiel pour le développement du continent. Cette émancipation ne saurait être entravée en raison de croyances religieuses ou plutôt de l’interprétation des dogmes qui auraient pour but de maintenir la femme dans une position d’éternelle subordonnée.

Il est donc temps, selon moi, de procéder à une relecture des textes religieux et de repenser la place des femmes dans les deux religions monothéistes. Il est également nécessaire d’arrêter d’opposer le droit des femmes à la religion comme deux principes antagonistes. L’existence du féminisme musulman et du féminisme chrétien démontrent qu’il n’y a pas d’antinomie entre la pratique d’une religion et le désir d’émancipation. Leur travail de déconstruction des traditions patriarcales dans leurs religions respectives est essentiel afin que la religion ne soit plus utilisée pour justifier le non-respect des droits des femmes.

Enfin, il est important de souligner que les sociétés africaines précoloniales étaient matriarcales et accordaient une place importante aux femmes. L’introduction sur le continent africain de l’islam et du christianisme ont profondément modifié la place occupées par les femmes.
